Line Sort and Dedupe — sort, trim and clean lists

Runs 100% in your browser — nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.

Sort, reverse, dedupe, trim and shuffle lists of lines. Each action runs in the page.

What the line tool does

Paste a list and sort it ascending or descending, reverse it, remove duplicate lines, strip blank lines, trim surrounding whitespace from each line, or shuffle it. Each action runs in the page.

Frequently asked questions

Does sorting respect case?
It uses the browser’s default text sort, which orders uppercase before lowercase. Trim first if you want a cleaner order.

What counts as a duplicate?
Two lines that are exactly the same, including their spacing. Use Trim lines first to catch near-duplicates.

Is anything uploaded?
No. All processing happens in the page.

How to use it

  1. Paste your lines into the top input field. Each line you add becomes part of the list the tool can sort, clean, or shuffle.
  2. Choose an action — click Sort A-Z, Sort Z-A, Reverse, Remove duplicates, Remove empty, Trim lines, or Shuffle. The result box updates instantly after each click.
  3. Combine actions if needed — for example, Trim lines first, then Remove duplicates, then Sort A-Z. Each click runs on the current result, not the original paste.
  4. Copy the result from the second input field. Nothing leaves the page during any of these steps.

Where it comes in handy

Cleaning a shopping list — paste ten to twenty grocery items that were copied from a notebook. Run Trim lines and Remove duplicates in two clicks, then sort them alphabetically so the list is easy to scan while you shop.

Deduplicating a contact export — copy a CSV-style dump of phone numbers where the same entry appears three or four times. Remove empty rows first, then Remove duplicates, and you end up with a flat list that a messaging app can import without errors.

Reordering a bug report — paste a messy list of fifty issue titles pulled from an email thread. Sort Z-A to push the newest entries to the top, then trim trailing spaces that sometimes come along when you copy from web pages.

Worth knowing

  • Case affects sort order — uppercase letters sort before lowercase. If you expect a dictionary order where Apple comes after apple, click Trim lines first; it won’t change the case, but it removes invisible spacing that can make the browser sort oddly.
  • Duplicate detection is exact — two lines that differ by a single space are treated as different. Use Trim lines before Remove duplicates to catch near-duplicates like “apple ” versus “apple”.
  • All processing stays in the page — the tool never uploads your text. It uses your browser’s built-in sort and string functions, which means large pastes (several thousand lines) may feel slightly slower than small ones, but nothing is sent to a server.
