Text to Speech — listen to any text in the browser

Runs 100% in your browser — nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.

Type text and have the browser read it aloud with selectable voice, rate and pitch. No audio is uploaded.

Uses the browser built-in speech synthesis. No audio is uploaded.

What the text to speech tool does

Type any text and the browser reads it aloud using its built-in speech voices. Pick a voice and tune the rate and pitch. Nothing is recorded or uploaded; the audio is synthesised on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Which browsers work?
Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox all support speech synthesis, though the set of voices differs by operating system.

Why is the voice list sometimes empty at first?
Voices load asynchronously; the list repopulates a moment after the page is ready.

Is my text uploaded?
No. Synthesis happens locally in the page.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type the text you want to hear into the input box.
  2. Choose a voice from the dropdown. The available voices depend on your operating system and browser.
  3. Adjust the rate slider to speed up or slow down the narration, and the pitch slider to make the voice sound higher or lower.
  4. Click Speak to play the text aloud. Click Stop to halt playback at any point.

Where it comes in handy

A 2,000-word blog post read at normal rate takes roughly 14 minutes. You can preview the pacing before committing to a full recording session, or listen while you do something else with your eyes.

Students often paste a dense paragraph and slow the rate to 0.8× to catch every word on the first listen. The pitch control can further distinguish syllables in technical material that blends together at standard speed.

Writers use the tool to check rhythm and flow. Reading your own draft aloud at 1.1× reveals sentences that stumble when spoken, even if they look fine on screen.

Worth knowing

  • Not all voices support every language. Switching the text to a language the selected voice does not cover will usually fall back to a default voice, often with inaccurate pronunciation.
  • Punctuation affects delivery. Commas produce short pauses, periods longer ones. Semicolons and dashes are not consistently respected across browsers.
  • The speech queue replays from the beginning when you change any setting mid-playback. There is no resume function; click Stop first, adjust, then Speak again.

Reference values

Text length Rate (×) Pitch Approximate duration Typical use Browser note
500 words 1.0× Normal ~3 min 30 s Short article or email Consistent across all major browsers
1,200 words 0.9× Normal ~14 min Standard blog post at slower pace Safari may round to nearest second
2,500 words 1.2× Normal ~17 min Long-form content at fast pace Firefox queues longer texts reliably
100 words 0.75× +0.5 ~1 min 20 s Phonetic practice at low pitch Pitch step granularity varies by OS
800 words 1.0× −0.3 ~5 min 45 s Narrative reading with slight bass Windows Edge has widest voice selection
3,000 words 1.5× Normal ~16 min Audiobook preview at accelerated speed Very high rates may sound distorted on some devices

Rounding matters when planning session length; Chrome reports durations to the nearest second while Safari may truncate, so budget an extra 10–15 seconds for long passages.
