Count words, characters, lines and paragraphs as you type. Estimates reading time too — everything stays in your browser.
What this word counter measures
It counts six things as you type: words, characters (including spaces), characters without spaces, lines, paragraphs (blank-line separated), and an estimated reading time at 200 words per minute. Everything is computed in the page, so nothing you paste leaves your browser.
How the counts work
A word is any run of non-whitespace characters; punctuation attached to a word still counts as one word. Characters counts every keystroke including spaces; the “no spaces” figure strips them out. Lines are counted on the newlines in your text; an empty box shows zero. Paragraphs are blocks separated by one or more blank lines.
Frequently asked questions
Does a character count include spaces?
Both figures are shown. “Characters” includes spaces; “Characters (no spaces)” removes every space, tab and newline before counting.
How is reading time calculated?
At a typical adult reading speed of 200 words per minute, so the estimate is words ÷ 200, rounded up.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The counter runs entirely in your browser tab. Close the tab and the text is gone — useful for drafts, essays and client copy you would rather not send to a server.
Does it count words inside punctuation?
Yes. don't is one word, and hello, is one word. The counter splits on whitespace, not on punctuation.
