VAT and Sales Tax Calculator
Take a price with tax out, or add tax to a net price, at any rate — the direction you actually need rather than one fixed percentage.
Inclusive versus exclusive
Consumer prices in much of Europe are shown gross — tax already inside. Business quotes are net — tax added on top. Mixing them up is one of the most common invoicing errors, so this tool asks which one you have instead of assuming.
Standard rates change. The country list gives a starting point, and the rate field stays editable so you can enter whatever rate applies on the invoice in front of you.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Set the amount to the price you see, choose “inclusive of tax”, and the net amount and tax portion are both shown.
Why does removing 20% not give back 20?
The tax is a share of the gross, not a percentage taken off it. From €120 inclusive you get €100 net and €20 tax.
Which countries have no VAT?
The United States has no VAT; sales tax is state and local instead, so it cannot be modelled as a single national rate.
Are these rates current?
They reflect the standard rate at the time of writing and are editable in the tool. Check your local rules for anything that matters commercially.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The arithmetic runs in this page.
