What the typing test does

Type the sample sentence as quickly and accurately as you can. Words per minute and accuracy update as you go, and the box locks when you finish.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?
It is the number of correctly typed words divided by the minutes elapsed, the standard typing-test measure.

Does accuracy penalise mistakes?
Yes. Each character that differs from the sample lowers the accuracy score.

Is anything uploaded?
No. Timing and scoring run in the page.

How to use it

  1. Click inside the input box that says “Type the text above…” to place the cursor and begin.
  2. Type the sample sentence exactly as it appears, including punctuation and the numbers at the end. Do not pause to look back at the sample—start typing from memory or by glancing quickly.
  3. Watch your words per minute and accuracy percentage update in real time as you type each character. The results reflect your performance up to that point, not just at the end.
  4. When you finish typing the full sentence, click the Reset button to clear the result and start another attempt.

Where it comes in handy

Practice before a typing assessment for a job application. Many employers expect a minimum of 40 words per minute, and this tool lets you check your speed in a single sitting without installing anything.

Track improvement over a two-week period. Record your WPM and accuracy after each session, then compare the numbers. A jump from 35 WPM to 50 WPM is noticeable and measurable within that timeframe.

Test keyboard layouts on a laptop with a cramped 13-inch screen. Switch between QWERTY and an alternative layout for ten minutes, then note whether your accuracy drops below 90 percent or your speed falls under 25 WPM.

Worth knowing

  • WPM is rounded to the nearest whole number. A result of 38.4 WPM displays as 38; 38.5 and above rounds up to 39. Small differences between attempts may be due to rounding rather than actual speed change.
  • The timing starts the moment you press the first key and stops when you complete the final character. If you stop typing partway through, no final result is shown and the box does not lock.
  • Extra characters typed beyond the sample length are not counted as errors in accuracy, but they are not counted toward the word total either. Only characters that match the sample count toward the final score.
