What the number to words tool does

Type an integer and read it written out in English words, from zero to trillions and into negative numbers. It is handy for cheques, legal documents and invoices.

Frequently asked questions

How large a number works?
Up to trillions. Beyond that the words get unwieldy and the standard naming stops being useful.

Are decimals supported?
This version spells the whole-number part; for currency, round to cents first or use a dedicated cheque writer.

Is anything uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in the page.

How to use it

  1. Enter an integer into the input field. The tool reads the value as you type and renders the English words immediately beside or below it.
  2. Negative numbers are supported — type a minus sign before the digits and the output adds the word “Negative” at the start.
  3. Numbers up to one trillion (1,000,000,000,000) are supported. Entering a larger value will not produce a result.
  4. Copy the spelled-out text directly from the output field and paste it into your document, cheque, or invoice.

Where it comes in handy

Writing a cheque for £3,750 requires the amount to appear in words as well as digits. The tool converts 3750 to Three Thousand Seven Hundred Fifty so you can copy it straight onto the line without looking up the spelling yourself.

A legal contract may reference a sum of 12,500,000 pounds. Spelling that out as Twelve Million Five Hundred Thousand avoids ambiguity between the numeral and the written figure, which can matter in dispute resolution.

An invoice line item for −840 units or a credit of negative eight hundred needs the number rendered correctly. The tool handles the negative sign and produces the same consistent format every time, including the word “Negative” at the front.

Worth knowing

  • The tool accepts only whole integers. If you enter a decimal such as 45.99, the fractional part is ignored and only 45 (Forty-Five) is produced. Round to the nearest whole number first, or use a dedicated cheque writer for currency amounts.
  • Numbers beyond 999,999,999,999 are not supported. The naming convention stops at trillions, and results beyond that range will not render.
  • British and American English conventions merge here: the tool uses “and” before the final two-digit group (e.g. One Hundred and Twenty-Three), which is standard in UK usage but optional in US usage.

Rounding matters when working with currency: because this tool only processes whole numbers, an amount like 4,387.50 will drop the cents and output Four Thousand Three Hundred Eighty-Seven. Round to the nearest whole unit before converting, or use a cheque-writing tool for exact cent-level conversion.
